Will You Stay Here For a Moment? opened on 10.24.2026. I started conceptualizing the exhibition last year after the curator reached out to me and I toured the space. Since it’s in a passageway, my first thought was, how do I get people to stop and look at the artwork? I have a lot of random notes from January about time, change, repetition, hedonism, and staying. Some ideas stuck and some are still sitting in my notes app (some I wrote about here and archived).
Fun fact, I almost settled on showing 2 older works because I wasn’t sure I would be able to finish the work. That’s when I started thinking about how I was spending my own time in the studio. It’s a luxury and a curse working from home. I’m a victim of kissing my dog and snack breaks. I was also processing news about a family member and trying to finish a piece started during a collaborative workshop at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego before leaving for vacation, so my attention was all over the place (I’m also a victim of thinking I can do it all).
I really noticed how easy it was to get distracted when I was working on A Record of Afters (which started as something else but didn’t work). I refused to let 50 rings and all that time sewing go to waste, so I had to pivot a little. I logged the calendar days, studio days, and all my labor, which helped and was an interesting experiment in staying off my phone. It definitely felt different, dare I say gross, when I went back to scrolling, but I also noticed how disconnected I felt from the world when I wasn’t on my phone. It was bizarre.
Seeing everything come together feels like such an accomplishment. It feels like this exhibition represents me (or I guess who I am now, in this moment). I put so much thought into every detail, from the concept to making the work itself, getting the work documented (thank you @photoandstudio !), designing and ordering the vinyl wall lettering, making the exhibition webpage, figuring out how to mount a chair to the wall and installing everything (with help from Austin of course).
The opening coincided with Quilt Visions 2026 and Origins (more on that soon). Learning that I'm the first in my medium to show work at a museum with a history of celebrating contemporary quilts and textile art as fine art feels like a milestone. Since my first exhibition in 2021 one of my goals has been to challenge narratives of what contemporary fiber art looks like and can be, and who gets included. I'm super proud of the concept and work in this exhibition and grateful I got to share a moment with everyone at the opening. Every time I get to do something cool and art related I'm like who? me?
